Today, rising ground level ozone concentrations are estimated to reduce maize yields by 10% in the US. Improving photosynthetic potential and efficiency has been suggested as an important target for increasing maize yields in the future. Understanding genetic variation in photosynthesis and the heritability of photosynthesis in maize is key to our ability to improve it. My research primarily focuses on hybrid and inbred maize populations to understand the heritability of photosynthesis and its response to ozone and mapping QTLs for photosynthetic response to ozone.
