Research:

Current research is focused on investigating the potential to maximize photosynthesis and yield at elevated [CO2] through a better understanding of the link existing between photosynthesis and source-sink relationship for photoassimilates. To address the hypothesis that crop plants could be “sugar export limited” at elevated [CO2] where photosynthetic activity and production of photoassimilates can be increased, we study soybean over-expressing a sugar transporter already known to be involved in phloem loading in the source leaves. Plants are grown in the field at ambient and elevated [CO2]. The yield, photosynthesis and sugar transport activity are compared between the wild-type and the over-expressor lines in these different conditions to determine the implication of sugar transporters in potential yield increase at elevated [CO2].
