Research:

High levels of tropospheric ozone and intense drought both have the potential to increase with anthropogenic climate change. Both of these stressors have well understood impacts on field crops, with elevated ozone resulting in a considerable reduction in yield and drought likewise resulting in a yield reduction, ultimately having a financial impact on both individual farmers and the market at large. Many areas with high levels of agricultural production are expected to see a concurrent worsening ozone and drought conditions under future climate scenarios, making an understanding of the interaction of the two stressors important. My research investigates the interaction between elevated ozone and drought in Soybean at the SoyFACE facility at the University of Illinois. At the site ambient ozone levels are elevated using FACE (Free Air Concentration Enrichment) throughout the growing season. Drought is imposed by deploying awnings which are situated within the rings during periods of rainfall. By using FACE and awnings we are able to investigate the interactive impacts on Soybean, and how they affect the photosynthetic physiology, growth, and yield traits throughout the growing season.
